Sketch comedy is an art form that involves skilled writing as well as performance. A sketch show is a collection of sketches. A sketch is a written scene performed. This can be done on stage or for television or film. Because it involves more writing, rehearsal and effort, it is rarer than other art forms. That is why it is usually reserved for television, making it more cost effective.
